Splitting a bill with a friend
How to add a shared expense, split the amount and record a transfer.
A shared expense
In the record editor pick the Expense type and fill in the amount. A Split with friends? hint appears below the fields.
Tap it — a picker opens with all the friends you have added.
Select the participants and press Continue. By default the amount is split equally between everyone on the record, you included.
Press Save Split — the dialog closes and you are back in the record editor.
Press Add record. Only now is the record saved.
A common mistake
After Save Split the split is set, but the record itself does not exist yet. Close the editor at this point and nothing is saved.
Ways to split
The split dialog has three modes:
| Mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Amount | You type the exact amount for each participant |
| Percent | Shares are set as a percentage of the total |
| Shares | Shares are set as numbers — 1, 2, 3 — and the proportions are worked out for you |
For each participant you can see what they paid and what they will owe.
By default you are the payer. Marking someone else as the payer (the Paid by field) needs an Owerly Pro subscription.
Transfers
A transfer records money moving between you and a friend outside of shared spending.
In the record editor pick the Transfer type.
Enter the amount.
Use the toggle to set the direction: From means the friend sent it to you, To means you sent it to them.
Pick the friend, give the transfer a title and press Add record.
You cannot record a transfer between two other people — you are always one of the two sides.
