Settling up with a friend
How to repay a debt in full or in part, and how cross-currency settlement works.
Repaying a debt
Open the friend's profile and press Settle up. The app adds up every open debt and shows the total.
From there you have two options:
- Repay everything — enter the full amount.
- Repay part of it — enter less. Records are closed automatically, oldest first: the earliest one is marked repaid and the remainder moves to the next.
The friend's profile shows which records are already closed and which are still open.
You can also settle a single record: open it and press Settle up.
Your friend paid you back but didn't record it
You can record the settlement on their behalf — in Owerly either side can do it.
Cross-currency settlement
When debts have piled up in several currencies, the settle dialog offers Cross-currency settlement: everything is merged into one currency of your choice at historical exchange rates — the rate on each record's own date, not today's.
Without it, debts are repaid one currency at a time: switch the currency in the settle dialog to move to the next one.
Cross-currency settlements are part of the Owerly Pro subscription.
Netting
Owerly nets opposing debts for you. You paid 100 for your friend, then they paid 60 for you — the balance keeps 40, and both original records stay with their full detail.
For groups there is a stronger mechanism that removes redundant transfers along a chain: Smart Settle.
